The Importance of Hearth Products

When thinking about your fireplace, we often forget the purpose of the fireplace surrounding called the hearth. The floor or ledge on your fireplace that extends into the room, as well as the wall around and above the fireplace is called the hearth. Fireplace hearths serve an important purpose as well as draw attention to the fireplace as a focal point in the room. The following will inform you on the value of fireplace hearth design.

Purpose of Fireplace Hearth

Hearth products were created to serve more of a purpose than strictly a decorative element, they provide a safer fireplace area, and prevent fire hazards. The floor of the fireplace extending into the room is there to prevent burning embers or logs from falling onto your floor and damaging it or even causing a fire. They are most helpful with wood fireplaces and stoves as they not only protect from ash and embers; it is an area where you can place your fireplace tools that you need to use regularly, or even store wood. Hearth areas also create clearance in your room giving a safe distance to stand, or place furniture away from the firebox. The outline of the hearth will also help you to recognize a safe area to place a barrier to prevent children or guests from touching the firebox glass. Fireplace hearths and hearth products are made from non-combustible material, such as stone, brick, or marble.

Fireplace Hearths as a Decorative Accent

Fireplaces in a room are without a doubt a focal point in any home, in addition to their heating value. The hearth around the fireplace uses materials and patterns that set the area apart from the rest of the home. If you’re interested in renovating the fireplace area there are some popular styles that are trending this year. Try placing glossy tiles from the top of the wall to the floor outlining the fireplace area creating a contemporary look. For another modern style of hearth use two similar colored bricks to break up the solid, and create texture to draw attention to the entire wall. To all the traditional stove and fireplace lovers, bring the country feel home by adding grained wood panels to the wall around the fireplace in a vertical direction giving the illusion of taller ceilings. For those of you who have outdated bricks and want to restore the hearth paint the bricks a cream or white creating a sophisticated area. Although in my opinion classic red bricks never go out of style, they are a timeless look. Rather than placing your heath products directly on the floor, add a stone or marble sitting ledge just ensure you have at least 16-18 inches of clearance from the stove or fireplace.
